Extensions can only be given in a players last contract year. If a player is extended during the offseason of his last contract year, then the owner has a choice to put it into effect right away or after the season (Must be more $$ to put it in effect right away). Any extension made during the season will not take effect until after the season.
To extend a player you find the position rank on yahoo (total and average) for each of the last 2 years and take the highest rank and that will be his extension rank. Any extension made before the NBA All star weekend will use the previous 2 years, and any extension made after that weekend will use the previous year and the current season. If a player is eligible at 2 positions then you take the higher paying one.
Players can be bumped up to the next extension limit if wanted.
ex. Tim Duncan finishes ranked 6th at PF to qualify for a $9.0m extension for a maximum of 4 years you can bump him up to $10.0m to extend him for 5 years.
Extending first year/zero-year players
First year players and players who have not yet played in the NBA cannot be extended until they have completed their first year, or have reached the end their contract.
Salary cap for contract Extensions
GMs cannot exceed salary cap when re-signing players. If the team does not have sufficient salary cap to pay for them players will need to be re-signed at a later time, when cap has been cleared, or alternatively released into free agency at the contract extension deadline.
